Earlier today, customers received messages from their service providers on a planned increase in price of data tariffs as prescribed by the Nigerian Communications Commisision (NCC).
One of them read: “Dear customer, please be informed that from 1st Dec, some data tariffs will be increased to reflect the new rates set by the NCC to operators. Thank you.”
Following the development, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) called on the Federal Government not to increase the cost of data to avoid further pressure on mobile telephone users.
Bobboi Kaigama, the President of the congress made the call in a statement in Lagos.
Kaigama said that the decision of government to jerk up the cost of data could increase insecurity, adding that “it is unacceptable’’.
Kaigama said that the increase in rate would further frustrate the people who were already burdened by high cost of goods and services.
“We feel worried about the move because data is one of the cheapest ways to empower the teaming youth. This move if allowed will make it unaffordable. This is insensitive on the part of the parties involved,” the TUC President said.
He further said that government should increase awareness for citizens’ participation in Information Communication Technology (ICT) rather than dampen their spirit to embrace the technology.
According to him, the decision if implemented will obstruct the drive to increase youth’s participation in ICT.
“What then will be the benefit of the policy to the self employed who depend on data for their businesses?. Cheap internet data is a vehicle to economic development. It is very unfortunate and inhuman to come up with such idea at a period of recession,” he said.
Kaigama said that any call for increase in prices of goods and services at the moment was uncalled for.
He therefore urged the government to create policies that would encourage investment and stimulate growth and boost businesses instead.
Some ICT stakeholders have expressed mixed reaction to the proposed increase.
Olusola Teniola, the President, Association of Telecommunication Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) said that with the increase, other telecom companies would jerk up their prices, which would adversely affect subscribers.
He said that operators would also increase the cost of megabytes, which consumers could not afford at this time of economic recession.
“So what we are saying at ATCON is that no taxes should be applied in this industry and if there any taxes, it should also include other sectors. Already, the cost of data will go up in December and subscribers will not be getting as much data as they paid for,’’ he said.
Edwin Okolo, a computer scientist said that the increase in the cost of data “is uncalled for’’, adding that there should be other avenues for government to make money.
“What we are saying is that we want every Nigerian to be linked with the internet and you are planning to increase the cost of data, so it is no longer for the poor,’’ he said.
However, Adede Williams, the National President of Telecommunications Professionals of Nigeria sought the understanding of subscribers in the proposed increase.
Williams said that some stakeholders in the telecom sector were soliciting the understanding of the subscribers in the increase.
“We the stakeholders are appealing to the subscriber to have a little understanding for to have effective service delivery. If you check out the tariff, it is just a slight difference from what we use to have, so that is the true position of things now. Some of the subscribers have been informed before now of the tariff increase. I know it is not easy but it is just because of the trend of what is happening in the country,’’ he said.
On Sunday, 27th November, a final year student of Agric Economics, University of Nigeria Nsukka, Tobechukwu Okeke committed suicide allegedly over accumulated debt. A plane carrying Brazilian football team, Chapecoensea has crashed in Colombia. The flight was transporting the footballers, the technical team and others to Medellin airport for the team’s match against Atletico Nacional when the plane disappeared off radar late last night.

This story was shared by a Facebook user, Dian Chelsea, who is probably the girl in question because the Facebook has only this post and was opened on 26th of November 2016.
The young lady was allegedly used as rituals after visiting a man whose name was given as Emeka Augustine Ozulike who started texting her out of the blues, told her he wants to marry her, invited her to a hotel, drugged her, raped her and she has been bleeding since that day up till today.

In today’s world, many atrocities are being committed and the most painful part of it is that the culprits keep getting away with their numerous crimes.
I wouldn’t want to base this on the present situation of the country because these acts has been in existence for as long as I can tell.
Here goes the story of S3@.x:’ually abused young girl and possibly, almost used for ritual by one Mr.Emeka Augustine Ozulike popularly known as (Obele), who hails from Akwa Village in Ifitedunu, Dunukofia LGA, Anambra State. Sources have it that he’s a successful business man with his businesses scattered all about the Main Market, Onitsha.
The abused girl pleaded for utmost anonymity but summed up courage to share her story which she believes is going to serve as an eye opener for young girls in our society.
It all began when a strange call entered her phone from this man. Who consistently claimed that she gave him her number which was a blatant lie. She later discovered that someone she regarded as friend actually gave her contact to the man. At first, she was very reluctant to speak to this stranger but the pressure became unbearable that she was left with no option than to tell him off which she did but that didn’t help as well. The said Emeka continued saying that his intentions were genuine, that he actually want her for a wife.
On hearing this, the girl calmed a little and decided to be a little bit more civil with this criminal. They eventually established a neutral conversation between themselves but the girl was still very skeptical about this Emeka guy. He suggested to her that it will be okay for them to see each other so that she will be more convinced that he’s real which she agreed to but distance seems to be a barrier at that point in time because they both stayed in different locations.
One faithful day, an important business had to bring Emeka to the city of residence of this girl; he called her as usual and informed her about his visit. She reluctantly went to the hotel where he lodged to see him, on getting there; they met at the hotel restaurant. They sat for a while and the man suggested they go to his room so the can talk comfortably. She hesitated at first and later obliged.
On getting to his room, he offered her a drink (a box juice), unknowingly to her, the juice was drugged. The last she remembered was taking the drink and possibly waking up N@kkd after several hours of being knocked out by the juice. She cried and later left in shame because she never planned to give this beast her cookie just yet. Getting home that evening, she noticed she was bleeding. Being a young girl, she thought it was her monthly flow but the bleeding continued.
She tried to reach the bastard on phone, after several missed calls; he neither picked nor returned her calls. At that point in time, in the midst of the bleeding, it just dawned on her that this man had used and possibly dumped her. Now her fear is the abnormal bleeding she’s experiencing because after all medical checks and series of tests performed on her, she’s normal with no fracture anywhere inside her system but the blood continues to flow. She’s very scared and confused having been proven Okay medically. She decided to cry out to the public to help her pass this message across to Emeka Augustine Ozulike ( aka OBELE) to come and undo whatever he did to her while he drugged her in his hotel room.
Girls please beware of beasts that walk in sheep clothing and try to avoid such a person. They are nothing but RITUALISTS. Even those you think they are your friends are actually back stabbers and devil’s incarnate in human form. Their punishment is still yet unknown because they will never go unpunished.”
