Cross River State High Court sitting in Calabar, on Friday, February 10th, remanded one Godwin Elewana at the Afokang Prisons for the second time for allegedly killing and burying 22 year old Douglas Ojugbo (pictured) whom he had suspected was having an affair with his daughter.
In March 2015, Elewana, described as a dangerous man chased the late Douglas upon sighting him from a distance of about a kilometer to the gate of the Cross River Basin Development Authority where he shot him on the leg and arm.
After he died, Elewana of River Basin Authority, 8 Miles Calabar, took the corpse to the Federal Housing Police Station where he allegedly connived with the DPO to bury the deceased at the Goldie cemetery.
But, the deceased father in a petition to the Zone 6 command of the Nigeria Police Force argued that late Douglas was not having an affair with the accused daughter but only wanted to collect the balance of his Mini Laptop he had sold earlier to her.
The matter which was heard at Court 8 presided over by Justice Ukpa Ebitham saw prosecution counsel Amaja Eneji tender evidence to the Court which showed that the license of the double barreled gun used in shooting the deceased expired in 2013, about 2 years before the incident.
Also tendered in evidence were two expended cartridges, one machete, a double barreled gun and five pellets recovered from the body of the deceased following an autopsy carried out after exhumation of the corpse reports.
Amaja who argued that no civilian had the right to take the life of another prayed the Court to critically assess the matter with a view to delivering judgement.
However, Defense Counsel, Clement Ukaegbu, told the Court that the wife of the accused had filed for an out of court settlement. The matter is adjourned till February 27 with presiding Judge Ebitham saying the matter will not be allowed to proceed beyond 2 weeks as it was a case of alleged murder.

The Lagos state command is investigating a case of suspected murder committed by a 51 year old man against his mother. On February 7, 2017 at about 11pm, one Akintunde Ayoola
of united estate, Sangotedo, Ajah Lagos, came to the station and reported that on the same date at 6pm, he got information that his brother, Oluwaseye Ayoola manhandled his mother over failure to release undisclosed amount of money to him.
However, on arrival at the scene, he found his mother, Dorcas Ayoola, 81, dead in a pool of her blood. The culprit, Oluwaseye Ayoola then fled to an unknown destination. At the receipt of the information, the command’s detectives from Ogombo division launched a manhunt for the suspect, he was consequently arrested.
Upon interrogation the suspect confirmed that he had gone to his mother to ask for the sum of #500,000 out of his late sister’s will of #11,000,000 but she refused to give him, an occurrence which angered the suspect and made him pounced on the old woman and axed her to death.
The Lagos state police command’s spokesperson SP Dolapo Badmos who confirmed the case said that the suspect is in custody while the corpse have been deposited in general hospital’s mortuary for autopsy.

The Nigerian Army has confirmed that Boko Haram insurgents ambushed and killed some troops in the Damboa area of Borno State.
Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj. Gen. Lucky Irabor, in a chat with Punch, revealed that the insurgents escaped into the bush after the attack.
A civilian was also shot dead, while two others were injured.
Irabor said: “There was an incident like that on Saturday. There was a military convoy passing and the Boko Haram came out in an ambush. One civilian was killed and two others injured. The Boko Haram members incidentally ran away. There was no death on the part of the Boko Haram insurgents.
“The insurgents only wanted to disturb the peace and we lost a civilian. If you are in touch with happenings here, you will know that ambushes are not a big deal; two or three terrorists may set up an ambush.
“It was not true that the terrorists took away military vehicles. You cannot have a military convoy in procession and then an ambush, and vehicles will be taken away. We resisted them and they fled into the bush.”
A source added that the corpses of two soldiers killed during the incident, have been deposited at the Maiduguri Teaching Hospital morgue.
“The troops were following some commercial vehicles from Maiduguri to Damboa area, when the Boko Haram attacked them. About eight persons were killed, while the terrorists also injured two soldiers, who later died.
“They hijacked two of the commercial buses and fled toward the Sambisa area”, he said.
